Bituthene® 3000 Liquid Membrane: What Is It Best For?

Where in-service temperatures don’t exceed 130°F (54°C), Bituthene is the best choice for waterproofing concrete decks. It may be used in split-slab construction for areas like parking decks and plaza spaces. Mechanical rooms, labs, kitchens, and bathrooms are just a few examples of interior applications. Bituthene® 3000 liquid membrane is a two-component, elastomeric, cold-applied material that may be used with the GCP waterproofing systems for a number of applications.

What Materials Are There in Bituthene?

Bituthene CP is a 1.5 mm thick, flexible, prefabricated waterproof membrane made of HDPE polyethylene film and a combination of thick self-adhesive bitumen/rubber. It serves as a self-adhesive waterproofing membrane for basements, sub-structures, and flat deck applications.

What Are the Uses of Bituthene® 3000 Liquid Membrane?

A Bituthene® 3000 liquid membrane is best suited for the following uses:

  • Reinforcement material at inside corners
  • Fillet material at inside corners
  • Sealing material at terminations
  • Flashing material around protrusions, drains, parapets, and curbs
  • Repair material for defects on concrete surfaces
  • Flashing material at corners

How to Prepare the Surface

All surfaces must be clean, dry, and devoid of any pollutants such as dust, grease, or oil. Bituthene liquid membrane can be used in applications at or above 25°F (-4°C) in temperature. Keep dry and above 40 °F when storing.

Mixing Instructions

The full ingredients of Part B should be added to Part A, then combined for 3 to 5 minutes to achieve uniformity. Part B is transparent, whereas Part A is black. To ensure complete mixing, be sure to scrape the containers’ sides and bottoms. It is necessary to use a mechanical mixer with flat paddle blades at a low speed (150 rpm). If streaks appear as a result of inadequate mixing, refrain from applying any material. Bituthene® 3000 liquid membranes must be applied by trowel within 1.5 hours of mixing.

At lower temperatures, more time is allowed. Faster thickening and curing will occur at higher temperatures. Thickened material must be thrown away. After curing, the substance will become very flexible and rubber-like. Unless otherwise specified in the instructions, Bituthene® 3000 liquid membrane must be applied at a minimum thickness of 3 inches (2.3 mm).

The face of the fillet should be at least 34 inches (20 mm) in fillet applications. It should extend 6 inches (150 mm) in each direction from the corner, according to the application specifications for corner flashing. A Bituthene® 3000 liquid membrane will adhere to both primed and unprimed concrete.

Cleaning Instructions

Mineral spirits should be used to disinfect tools and equipment prior to liquid membrane curing. Being flammable liquids, mineral spirits should only be used in compliance with the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Never use solvents to clean your skin or hands.

Compatibility with Other Materials

Bituthene® 3000 liquid membrane works flawlessly with current asphalt- or coal-tar-based waterproofing solutions as well as Bituthene, Preprufe, and Procor. It is also compatible with polyurethane and silicone sealants that have been cured. It is not compatible with pentachlorophenol, creosote, linseed oil, or polysulfide-based sealants.
