About Our Backer Rods

Backer rods are normally circular, flexible foam lengths that come in a variety of forms, widths, diameters, and kinds to suit the relevant joint perfectly. Aside from size and shape, there are several important types of foam cell structure: bi-cellular, open-cell, and closed-cell. In the context of the application of irregular joints, desired joint flexibility, or sealant employed, cell structure makes a big influence. Some applications require a moisture-resistant closed-cell backup material, while others benefit from open-cell foam, which is extremely compressible and fills uneven joints more uniformly.

The backer rod has two purposes when it is utilized as a form of backing in expansion joints or gaps to assist in limiting the depth to which the sealant goes into the gap or the volume of sealant that is used. For starters, a backer rod functions as a bond breaker, allowing the sealant to stick to the joint’s walls rather than the bottom. This permits the sealant to swell and compress without allowing it to come loose from the sides, ensuring a tight seal. Second, backer rods not only fill gaps found between surfaces, saving money on sealant, but they also produce a depth that is ideal for strong binding.
