Fixing a Non-Working Caulking Gun

Nothing can put a damper on a home improvement project quite as much as a malfunctioning tool, especially if it stops working halfway through. When your caulking gun is not working, this can be a problem with the tool itself or the surface you are working with.

Keeping in mind that caulking guns are not very technologically sophisticated tools, troubleshooting one is relatively straightforward. On the flip side, that does mean that you may very well have to get a replacement if the problem turns out to be unfixable.

Read on to find out some common causes of a caulking gun not working and how you can fix it.

Clogged Tube

When you have a clogged tube in your caulking gun, the simplest solution is to unclog it. However, that can be easier said than done. It may be that dry caulk is blocking the tube, or that buildup has accumulated around it. This may be especially true if you are using a caulking gun for the first time and are not particularly skilled at using it.

To resolve this issue, you will need to make use of a long tool. Most caulking guns come with a metal prong, which you can use to unclog the tube. However, if yours doesn’t, you will need to get a long tool, such as a screwdriver. Stick it into the tube and rotate slowly before pulling it out. If nothing comes out, one of two scenarios is possible: either you will need to use a longer tool, or the caulk inside has dried out and you will need to purchase a new one.

Weak Spring

One of the worst possible scenarios that can occur is a weak spring. As the spring is what controls the plunger, it will have to be taut enough to serve its purpose. If you notice that the spring has loosened or become weak, it’s an indication that your caulking gun is near the end of its lifespan. There is no quick fix for this, and the only thing you can do is to purchase a new caulking gun.

Stuck Plunger

Does the plunger of your caulking gun refuse to come out, even when you have removed the caulk tube? If so you may be able to resolve this issue by resetting the plunger. This can be found where you would usually place your tube of caulk.

To reset your caulk gun, you will first need to pull back the release bar. This is usually located above the handle. All you need to do is pull it to reset the plunger.
