Description
Vulkem 116 is a one-part polyurethane, gun grade, moisture curing sealant. It offers excellent performance in moving joints, is flexible and durable. Vulkem 116 is an excellent sealant for general purposes intended for use on masonry work, door and window perimeters, poured and precast concrete and similar types of construction joints. It is suitable for continuous submersion in water.
Substrate Preparation:
Surfaces must be clean and sound. Removal of all existing dust, release agents, paints, loose mortar, other finishes or field applied coating, and waterproofing have to be ensured. This can be done with a thorough sandblasting, grinding, solvent washing or wire brushing, depending on the contamination.
Tremco suggests that surface temperatures be at least 40 ÌŠF (5 ÌŠC) and up at the sealant application time. If applying sealant in temperatures less than 40 ÌŠF, please check in the Tremco Technical Bulletin for Applying Sealants in Cold Conditions (No. S-08-44 rev 1) which is available on our website at www.tremcosealants.com
Priming:
Vulkem 116 typically sticks without primers to common construction substrates; when necessary, Tremco always suggests that a field adhesion test or mock-up be made on actual materials to be used on the job to validate the need for proper cleaning, prep requirements and primer. Refer to appendix X1 of ASTM C 1193, Standard Guide for Use of Joint Sealants for the field adhesion test.
When needed, use Vulkem Primer® #191 Low VOC QD for porous substrates and TREMprime® Non-Porous Primer for metals and plastics.
Application:
Use with conventional caulking equipment for ease of application of Vulkem 116. Ensure that any primers have been applied and proper friction-fitting for the backer rod is done.
Ensure that the joint is filled up completely with a proper radio for width-to-depth, and tool to make sure intimate contact between sealant and joint walls.
The preferred choice is dry tooling, however, if necessary, xylene can be used in limited amounts to slick the spatula.
For a cleaner finishing and look, mask the sides of the joint with tape prior to filling.
